The Studio Diaries

When It’s Time To Go.

A farewell to a place. A close to a chapter. This short video celebrates the process of self portraiture. I filmed myself creating a photo series that involved themes of body image and the expression of joy through body movement. Movement that was inspired by somatic therapy.

The transition between color and black-and-white segments are to differentiate between the process of creating versus the creation independently. The black-and-white segments are also reversed as a representation of ruminating the past. Amongst grieveing old versions of self, especially those connected to places and people, our connections to our own bodies can become static with the volume in our head turned way up. This body of work is an exploration of and an attempt to reconnect to self. A reconnection both in the midst and post life transitions.

As an artist, processing and expressing the heavier emotions through creating has always been at the forefront. Self portraiture has always been much more than the practice of a technical skill. It has been there to learn how to see myself when things get foggy, metaphorically speaking. Putting this video together 2 years after recording the footage was interesting. How ironic it felt to “revisit” these emotions and the girl feeling them as I found myself occupying similar feelings from similar changes today from current experiences. This video helped me see the differences in how these situations were felt within me then vs. now. Life is a trip when you see clearly the cycles you put yourself in. Grateful to have my art to help me see myself when I haven’t felt the most understood. Grateful for the growth I can claim.
